OpenGL + SDL vs DirectX

So what do you think on this one?

OpenGL is the standard for most of the 3D applications available today. SDL is a toolkit which works with OpenGL and contains many OS-dependent functions. On the other side is DirectX which is essentially a combination of both SDL and OpenGL put together by Microsoft. It's used mostly by proprietary applications.

Which do you prefer?

I've always used OpenGL for 3D graphics because it has a free implementation of it, Mesa3D. Direct3D (the component of DirectX equivalent to OpenGL) does not. OpenGL is also cross-platform with implementations existing even on phones. DirectX only works with the Windows series of operating systems.

Since I use OpenGL, I'll also use SDL if I need its functionality since DirectX doesn't link very well with OpenGL. But usually, I don't need all that power and just stick with freeglut for creating windows.

5 Reasons to Use Free Software

Free software is not just software that is free of charge. That's freeware. The free in free software is as in freedom to use, copy, modify and redistribute. A subcategory of free software is open source which advertises the same thing using different principles.

Here are a few reasons why you should use free software:

1. It costs nothing. Well, usually. You can still buy it on CDs and stuff which it permits but it's usually free of charge.

2. You have freedom. You are permitted to sell copies for a profit, give them away, change them as well as share ideas.

3. Free software can never die out. Software like Photoshop may die out one day if Adobe goes out of business. On the other hand, GIMP will never completely die. Yes, its developers may leave and it may be abandoned but because it's free, anyone can continue to develop it and it lives on.

4. It's community based. Support comes from developers as well as users just like you. Bug reports are taken seriously and watched over by the community to make sure they are resolved.

5. It's better. In one way or another, free software generally takes on non-free alternatives as a better solution. While non-free software typically has loads of money pouring in, it also has set deadlines that must be met to satisfy investors. Without those deadlines, free software is less buggy, gets in more features and is easier to use.

With that, go out and get a copy of GIMP and start using that instead of Photoshop. Or a copy of Firefox instead of IE, Safari or Opera. Or, if you're really serious about free software, go out and run a free operating system based on BSD or Linux. If you give them as much time as you give their non-free counterparts, then you won't be looking back.

Switch/Case vs If/Else

Some people say that using the switch statement is a bad habit. I never really understood why though. Maybe because it looks so different from the other code? In any case, with most languages that implement it in one way or another, it manages to be faster to a certain extent. It also makes code shorter. With other languages, only the latter is true.

This site did a test using C# and found switch/case to be faster in that language: http://www.blackwasp.co.uk/SpeedTestIfElseSwitch.aspx I'm not sure about how PHP or any other language performs but I assume something similar.

What do you prefer and what are your reasons behind that choice? If you have any benchmark tests for various languages, please post them here as well.

I've always used switch/case when given the opportunity. Usually, it's not because they're faster but because they look better. While it may take me about 2 seconds to read a series of if/elseif/else, it takes me about 1.5 to read a series of switch/case.

as you know Mortal Combat 4 has the 3D version but there was an old version and has 2D only with DOS application if anyone could help me to find this version or even one more version older 3 I really thankful.
I love this game and I hate the 3D acceleration version of it.
